On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, third-year students enrolled in the International Relations program participating in the course INR67-323: Korean Language for International Relations 1 (Trimester 1/2026) took part in a hands-on Korean cultural experience by preparing “Gimbap” (김밥), the traditional Korean seaweed rice roll.
The activity provided students with a unique opportunity to experience Korean culture through cuisine—a vital medium reflecting the lifestyle, creativity, and cultural identity of the Korean people. Guided by Mr. Kim Dong Woong, a volunteer instructor from KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency), students learned the step-by-step process of preparing Gimbap, with venue support provided by the ProChef Culinary Training Center at Walailak University.
For the Bachelor of Arts Program in International Relations at Walailak University, foreign language education extends far beyond memorizing vocabulary and grammatical structures. The curriculum emphasizes understanding the social and cultural contexts as well as the people of different nations, which serves as a crucial foundation for international relations studies.
Currently, the program offers courses in four foreign languages: Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian. This curriculum structure enables students to advance their language skills alongside gaining a deeper appreciation of Asian and global cultures.
This activity marks another essential learning milestone, fostering cross-cultural understanding and equipping students with foreign language proficiency and cultural intelligence. It aims to prepare future graduates to effectively connect people, societies, and nations in an increasingly diverse and dynamic world.
