Walailak University Hosts the 15th Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Conference, First Time in Thailand!!

Walailak University, in collaboration with the School of Political Science and Public Administration, the Geo-Social and Cultural Research Center for Sustainable Development (GSCR), and the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society, hosted the 15th Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Conference, the first time in Thailand, from July 23-25, 2025, at the Twin Lotus Hotel and Walailak University, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The theme of the conference was “Geo-Social Connection: The Continuing Journey of Critical Inquiry.”

This conference marks the first time Thailand has had the honor of hosting the event since its inception in 1998. Over 450 researchers, artists, and students from more than 15 countries in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States participated to exchange knowledge, research experiences, and promote international academic cooperation in cultural studies, media, and knowledge production in the region.

During the opening ceremony, we were honored by the presence of Mr. Ekachai Sunthorn, Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Governor, Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice President for International Affairs and Educational Development, Walailak University, and Dr. Andy Chih-ming Wang, President of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society.

Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing that Walailak University is committed to promoting deep and ethical learning to develop students and scholars to become leaders in driving creative change.

Dr. Andy Chih-ming Wang, President of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society, remarked that this conference marks an important gathering for the network after the COVID-19 pandemic, symbolizing a transition to a new generation. It emphasizes the role of youth in building lasting relationships, understanding, and friendships while creating a space for exchanging ideas, even with differing perspectives.

Assistant Professor Dr. Siriporn Sombunburan, Conference Chair, Director of GSCR, and Lecturer at the School of Political Science and Public Administration, stated that the conference focuses on promoting the concept of “Inter-Asia Referencing,” encouraging scholars in Asia to reference and connect with each other in order to build a knowledge base that truly addresses the regional context, rather than relying on Western frameworks.

Furthermore, the conference aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, “Partnerships for the Goals,” by providing opportunities for faculty members to network academically and for students to take on roles as field hosts, learning skills in communication, event organization, and international etiquette.
