The ASEAN Studies Program Hosted an "Online Social Science Research" Workshop

February 8, 2022

Mr. Arthit Suriyawongkul, PhD candidate at ADAPT Centre, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, Ireland, and advisor to the Thai Netizen Network, delivered a lecture and shared his experiences with second-year students in the ASEAN Studies Program throughout a workshop titled “Online Social Science Research.”

This workshop consisted of two consecutive sessions. During the first session on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, the speaker primarily delivered a comprehensive talk to the students. It started with an overview of the essential ideas and concepts of online area research, the overlap between online and offline spaces, and how to do research in the digital world. The lecturer then instructed the students to build their own critical thinking and writing abilities via practice. In the second session, which took place on Friday, 25 February 2022, the speaker discussed his online research experiences, exchanged ideas, and provided feedback on student work.

This workshop was one of three activities scheduled by the ASEAN Studies Program as part of the larger project Research Methodology Workshops for ASEAN Studies. This “Online Social Science Research” workshop sought to train students conceptually and methodologically, so that they may adjust their work in response to the coronavirus epidemic, which may restrict their ability to do conventional field research efficiently.
